Overview
The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) programme is geared towards
knowledge creation and advancement through innovative business
strategies, problem-solving techniques, and application of skills
and competencies in diverse business environments for sustainability
and prosperity. The goal of the BCom programme is to equip ODeL
students with foundational knowledge, skills, and competences in
Accounting, Finance, and Marketing. It is hoped that ODeL students
will transfer these skills and competences into business management,
becoming innovative in strategy and adept at problem-solving through
teaching, training, and research for sustainable development.
The Bachelor of Commerce degree consists of coursework and
examinations which normally take a period of four (4) academic
years, comprising two semesters per academic year. There is also a
mandatory eight-week period for industrial attachment in an
institution where learners can apply the skills acquired during the
course and further immerse themselves in industry practice.
Areas of Specialization:
1. Accounting
2. Finance
3. Marketing
This program is delivered entirely online.
Research Project
Before graduation, all ODeL students will be required to undertake
and submit a research project for assessment. The student shall
develop a concept on a selected project idea under the guidance of
the course unit coordinator and project supervisor(s). The process
involves research, data collection, data analysis, and presentation
of findings in a seminar attended by departmental members. A final
project report will then be submitted for evaluation. The project
will be examined by at least three examiners (including the
supervisor), and will be assessed as follows:
- Oral presentation – 40%
- Project report – 60%
- Total – 100%
A research project is guided research aimed at equipping the learner
with critical knowledge and practical skills. It involves the
formulation of a research problem, systematic data collection, data
analysis, and deriving meaningful conclusions. Successful completion
of the project requires demonstration of original thought and a
significant contribution to knowledge through a scientific report
and oral defense.
